Spent a nice day visiting the city of York. Walked the walls – York has the most miles of intact walls in England. Visited the Shambles, Europe’s best preserved Medieval street. The name comes from the word Shamel a word meaning (sort of) flesh as this was a street of butchers in the 1800’s.
Visited the Jorvik Viking Centre which has many finds from a 1,000 year old Viking settlement at York. The type of soil has preserved the finds so that they have been able to tell the colour of clothes, the actual faces, and even faces from when the Vikings lived there.
The picture is of Clifford’s Tower, the tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror.
