Research & Instruction

Kathie Ross, PhD, CPA, CGA

Kathie is interested in issues of gender and diversity in professions, particularly accounting.  Her work is related to the broader categories of social sustainability and business and society.

Her most recent project was  a post-graduate research project that utilized oral history interviews to explore the interaction between continuing professional development (CPD) and identity for women professional accountants in Canada.  Oral history interviews are valuable as they allow the women’s voices to be heard and illuminate broader societal issues that are revealed.

She was a recipient of the Overseas Research Scholarship from Newcastle University, a CGA-BC doctoral fellowship, and an Athabasca University Excellence in Research Scholarship.  For an overview of her current research click here.  For Kathie’s Blog click here.

Her previous work explored the factors that influence modality selection in CPD courses – why accountants selected their CPD courses, an article on the results may be found here.

Kathie also offers curriculum development and instruction on a contract basis in tax, accounting, and software.  Her extensive background in income tax includes work in both public practice and the Canada Revenue agency (CRA).  She particularly enjoys the complexities of international tax and the practical application of international tax treaties.

Kathie has developed curriculum and taught courses in accounting, tax, and financial management for a number of universities and colleges.  While at CRA she developed and taught courses for potential, new, and experienced auditors in topics ranging from basic accounting to international tax.

Kathie also likes to facilitate courses in accounting and tax software programs for both the MAC and the PC.  She has taught courses ranging from Quickbooks and Simply Accounting (now Sage) to Cantax and Taxprep.

Kathie enjoys the connections she makes in both distance and face-to-face instruction.
